Buy Krugerrands - The Krugerrand is a South African coin which was introduced in 1967 as a vehicle for private ownership of gold. Since then the Krugerrand, which is produced by the South African Mint has proved popular and by the 1980’s accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. During the 1970’s and 80’s some countries forbade import of Krugerrands because of the association with the apartheid government, which has since been abolished. The 1oz Krugerrand coin is today one of the most popular and cost effective ways of investing in gold bullion coins. In 1980 the South African Mint also introduced three smaller Krugerrand coins with a half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce of gold. It was in fact the success of the gold Krugerrand UK which later influenced other gold producing nations to mint their own bullion coins such as the American Eagle gold coin and the British Britannia coins.
