The 2024 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings 50p gold proof coin commemorates 80 years since the successful attack on the beaches of Normandy by the Allied Forces. It pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the men who gave their lives to bring freedom to Europe.
On D-Day, 6 June 1944, over 132,000 ground troops and 18,000 paratroopers successfully landed on five Normandy beaches in France. This pivotal event enabled the Allies to establish a crucial second front against Germany and led to liberation of France and the rest of Northern Europe. It was perhaps the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, The Royal Mint is releasing a special coin developed with the assistance of Imperial War Museums (IWM). The reverse side of the coin, designed by acclaimed artist David Lawrence, honours the bravery of Allied soldiers as they step of a landing craft into German machine-gun fire. It includes the date of 6 June 1944 and the 5 beach's codenames - Utah, Omaha, Gold June and Sword.
The 2024 80th Anniversary of D-Day 50p gold proof coin contains 15.5 grams of 22-carat gold minted to a proof finish. It comes in a beautiful Royal Mint box and is accompanied by an informative booklet which give the history of this famous battle and its significance in ending the War. Production of this 2024 D-Day gold proof 50p has been limited to 350 presentation coins.
