Shield Back Sovereigns were issued from 1838 until 1887. Until 1848 they featured the Small Young head with the Wlliam Wyon obverse design and London Mint Shield reverse design (WW on neck of Victoria). Sovereign dates from the forties are hard to find.
The reverse of this 1846 gold Sovereign coin features the much sought-after shield design along with the Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria.
