A rare, collectable Irish Gunmoney Shilling of King James II, dated 1689 and the month of December. The obverse features laureate and draped bust facing left. The reverse shows crown over crossed sceptres with "XII" representing the value of one Shilling. This coin has the very rare error of ERA for FRA in the legend; normally this die error is seen for the coins struck in the 'Jan' issue. These fascinating coins were issued when James landed in Ireland with insufficient funds to prosecute the war, and issued these brass tokens made from scrap cannons which led to the name 'gun-money.' This would be exchanged for silver on wining the war, which of course did not happen.

Crown over crossed sceptres with JR at sides date and value above and month below. MAG.BR.ERA.ET.HIB.REX. Variant ERA for FRA error.
