A silver Crown coin of King George IV, dated 1821. King George IV ruled for 10 years from 1820-1830, but he was Prince Regent from 1811, when his father George III became unfit to rule due to severe mental illness. Gradually, his reputation deteriorated, causing the country much embarrassment. Due to the financial problems at the time, there was a shortage of silver to produce the now scarce coinage of George IV. The silver Crown is sometimes confused with the Sovereign, because of the classic design used for the reverse of the coin.

George IV Laurel Head.

St George and Dragon design.
