BullionByPost is proud to offer numismatic collectors a growing range of rare collectable coins, including this milled Silver Double Florin of Victoria in Fine condition. This 1890 Silver Double Florin features the Victoria Jubilee Head Bust on the obverse and a Crowned Cruciform on the reverse.
"This Wretched Coin". This was the comment in an article in the Daily Telegraph June 27 1887 which heavily criticised its arrival. The worse thing however was the size, only slightly smaller than a crown piece (5 shillings), the double florin (4 shilling piece) was often passed in the dingy pubs to the barmaids as the larger coin, hence the nickname the ‘barmaids ruin’. It only lasted for six years before it was withdrawn to the relief of the barmaids!
