A very collectable, high grade, hammered silver Groat of King Charles I from the Aberystwyth mint. The obverse has the larger bust facing left, and IIII behind in Roman numerals - indicating Groat (Fourpence). The reverse has the round shield of Royal arms. The coin features the mint mark "Book" showing that the coin was minted between 1638 and 1642. This would have been one of the first produced in the Aberystwyth mint; set up in 1637 and was using silver extracted from Welsh mining operations. An attractive dark-tone with a flan crack around 10 o'clock and a dink, minor crease to face area. Otherwise a strong, collectable, and scarce coin.

Larger crowned bust of Charles I breaks inner circle, facing left with lace collar and no shoulder armour, plume to left and IIII to right. Mint mark of "Book" CARLOVS.D:G:M:BR:P:ET.HI:REX.

Shield with beaded boarder CHRISTO.AVSPICE.REGNO.
