Gold Guinea coins are a British gold bullion coin, minted for several hundred years. The Guinea was the predecessor to the Pound and is 1/4 ounce in weight, making it very similar to a gold Sovereign.
The name, Guinea, is taken from the region in West Africa where the gold was sourced to make these coins - mined as part of British colonialism in the region. The area is what is now The Gold Coast, including modern-day Ghana.
