A milled, 1776 George III gold Guinea. This gold coin features the fourth bust of George III on the obverse along with the text GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA (George III by the grace of God) and a Crowned Shield of Arms, Lion of Nassau at the centre on the reverse, with the wording M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E and the date of 1776.
George III was the third Hanoverian king of Great Britain. His life has been well documented as he was known as the Mad King after his illness got the better of him in 1810. It is now believed that he was suffering from porphyria. This shield back Guinea is not as well known as the more common spade type.
Graded to XF45 Near Very Fine (NVF). Complete details with minor wear on some of the high points.
