This specific 1887 Double Florin features a minting error from the Royal Mint. During the first year of production, the Mint accidentally used the Roman number I instead of the more typical Arabic number 1, and corrected the issue later that year.

"This Wretched Coin". This was the comment in an article in the Daily Telegraph on June 27th 1887, which heavily criticised its arrival. The problem was its size; the Double Florin was worth four shillings but it was only slightly smaller than a crown piece, worth 5 shillings. As a result, the double florin was often used in pubs to scam barmaids who mistook it for the larger coin, which led to the nickname ‘Barmaid's Ruin’.

We have available coins in fine, very fine and extremely fine condition. They sit nicely with crowns or type collections. This coin is considered as 'fine' and you will receive the very coin in the images.
