A very collectable and scarce, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Pointed helmet" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Elfgar" at the London mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be substandard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin has a strong strike to both sides and is of good "eye appeal".

Voided short cross with circle centre, Pellet in circle in each quarter. ELFRGAR ON LVNDE.
