Description

A very collectable and scarce, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Quatrefoil" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Goodman" at the Dover mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be substandard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin is well struck and of very light-even tone, strong eye appeal and very scarce.

Quatrefoil type. Crowned late style bust "A" with contained drapery, facing left within quatrefoil. CNUT REX ANGLO.

Reverse
Quatrefoil with pellet at apex of each cusp, voided long cross. GOODMAN.M.DOV.
