Description

A very collectable and rare, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Quatrefoil" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Godric" at the Gloucester mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be substandard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin is well struck with a couple of "peck" marks (common antiquated nicks or test marks on early coins) and is very rare.

Quatrefoil type. Crowned late diademed style bust, facing left within quatrefoil. CNUT REX ANGLO.

Reverse
Quatrefoil with pellet at apex of each cusp, voided long cross. GODRIC:ON GLEP.
