A very collectable and scarce, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Quatrefoil" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Aelfwine" at the Malden mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be sub-standard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin is well struck and of even-dark tone, and at 1,000 years old is very scarce.

Quatrefoil type. Crowned late style bust "A" with pointed nose, facing left within quatrefoil. CNUT REX ANGLOL.

Quatrefoil with pellet at apex of each cusp, voided long cross. AELPINE ON MAELDV.
