Description

A very collectable, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Quatrefoil" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Sumarlithr" at the Tetford mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be substandard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin has a strong portrait, legend partially weak, otherwise good overall eye appeal.

Quatrefoil type. Crowned middle style bust with small face, facing left within quatrefoil. CNUT REX ANGLORUM.

Reverse
Quatrefoil with pellet at apex of each cusp, voided long cross. SVMRLED MO DEOD.
