Description

A very collectable, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Short cross" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Svertingr" at the Lincoln mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be substandard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin is of strong strike and even-light tone with much eye appeal.

Short cross type. Bust diademed facing left with sceptre in front. CNUT REX ANG.

Reverse
Voided short cross with circle centre, Pellet in circle in centre. SPERTINC ON LIN.
