Description

A very collectable, early hammered, silver Penny of King Cnut. A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Short cross" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Freothuwine" at the Styning Mint between the years 1016-1035. In this period, moneyers had to have their name on the coin to assure quality control. Any coins found to be substandard would result in severe consequences for the moneyer, even going so far as hanging! This coin of strong strike and even tone, minor "peck" marks on obverse, (common antiquated "nicks" or test marks on early coins).

Short cross type. Bust with diadem facing left with sceptre in front. CNUT REX.

Reverse
Voided short cross with circle centre, Pellet in circle in centre. FRIDII ON STAENII.
