BullionByPost is proud to offer numismatic collectors a growing range of rare, collectable coins, including this Hammered Silver Penny of King Edward the First. Dated between 1272 and 1307, in about fine condition, this Silver Penny features a Crowned facing bust of King Edward I on the obverse, and a Long Cross with pellets on the reverse. When Edward I learned he was King following the death of his father, King Henry III in 1272 he was in the Holy Land commanding an army of Christendom against the Saracens as part of the ninth Holy Crusade. Travelling back from Acre took Edward two years, and he was officially crowned at Westminster Abbey on August 2nd, 1274.
Famed for feats in hunting, falconry and jousting, Edward the First was the epitome of a medieval King, and was nicknamed "Longshanks" on account of his impressive height of 6"2". Edward became most famous for his attempts to unite England, Scotland and Wales, creating the beginnings of a true democracy with a partly elected parliament in 1295. His military campaigns were largely successful, and in Scotland particularly he is infamous for his brutal suppression of forces under the leadership of William Wallace.
These silver pennies, known as "Longcross" are early examples of medieval commerce and stood the test of time for some 200 years. The principle design of the "Longcross" was that, by extending the cross to the edges of the coin, it would help stop the practice of clipping. Many of these coins were struck at provincial mints, and have minor differences to both the reverse and obverse. The subtle differences of each coin, as well as their incredible age, make these a fascinating coin to collect and study.
