BullionByPost is proud to offer numismatic collectors a growing range of rare collectable coins, including this hammered Silver Penny of King Edward II. Dated between 1307 and 1327, in fine condition, this Silver Penny features a Crowned facing bust of King Edward the Second on the obverse, and a Long Cross with pellets on the reverse.
King Edward II ascended the throne following the death of his father, King Edward I in 1307. Edward the Second is considered one of the sadder personalities of the English monarchy; despite good looks, intelligence and a strong physique, his reign is considered unsuccessful. The military campaigns of his father dragged on and led to failure, and he was eventually deposed by his wife and her lover, Roger Mortimer. It is believed he was murdered at Berkley Castle in 1327, potentially on the orders of Mortimer, thereby removing any risk of his continued claim. His son, Edward III, succeeded him to the throne.
These silver pennies, known as "Longcross" are early examples of medieval commerce and stood the test of time for some 200 years. The principle design of the "Longcross" was that, by extending the cross to the edges of the coin, it would help stop the practice of clipping. Many of these coins were struck at provincial mints, and have minor differences to both the reverse and obverse. The subtle differences of each coin, as well as their incredible age, make these a fascinating coin to collect and study.
