A very collectable, early hammered, silver Penny of King Aethelred II, know as the "Unready". A very old coin from the late Anglo-Saxon period of the first Kings of England. This coin is of the "Short cross" type, and was struck by the moneyer named "Edsige" at the Winchester mint between the years 978 to 1016. The obverse features the bare headed bust facing left with a sceptre in front. The reverse shows the short cross with the letters of "CRUX" in the angles giving name to this type of coin. King Aethelred's coinage is rated most impressive of the Anglo Saxon government, due to efficient recalls of old coinage when the new designs were issued.

Bare headed bust facing left with sceptre in front. AEDELRED REX ANGLOV.

Voided short cross with the letters C R U X in the angles. EDSIEGE M-O PINTONI.
