BullionByPost is proud to offer numismatic collectors a growing range of rare collectable coins, including this milled Silver Shilling from 1745.
The obverse of the coin features the young portrait of King George II facing left with laurels in his curly hair and wearing a tunic with lion's head on the shoulder. Around the edge of the coin is written GEORGIVS II DEI GRATIA, meaning 'George II by the Grace of God'. Below the bust the word LIMA indicates that this coin was stuck from silver seized from Spain's colonies in South America by Admiral George Anson or another privateer .
The reverse of the coin features four crowned shields arranged in the form of a cross, the joined shield of England and Scotland appears at the top, the three fleur-de-lis of France on the right, Ireland's Harp on the bottom and the Electorate of Brunswick and Lüneburg on the left. In the centre is the Star of the Garter representing the chivalric order set up four centuries earlier by Edward III.
Around the coin's edge are the letters 'M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E 1745', the date being broken by a crown. Which we can translate as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Archi-Thesaurus and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire".
