Description

A collectable-grade, silver Double Florin of Queen Victoria, dated 1889. On the obverse the Queen's "Jubilee" bust faces left, and has the rare and unusual inverted 1 for the "I" in VICTORIA. The obverse features crowned cruciform shields with sceptres in the angles.

These Double Florins were only struck for three years between 1887 and 1890, and became unpopular with the public and commerce alike, due to there similar size to the Crown. The "Wretched Coin" - this was the comment in an article in the Daily Telegraph June 27, 1887, which heavily criticised its arrival. Only slightly smaller than a Crown piece (5 shillings), the Double Florin (4 shilling piece) was often passed in the dingy pubs to the barmaids as the larger coin, hence the nickname the "barmaids ruin".
