The 2023 Merlin 1oz gold coins are part of The Royal Mint's Myths and Legends series, which celebrates the legendary figures of British mythology. Merlin is one of the most prominent figures in Arthurian legend, known as a powerful sorcerer and advisor to King Arthur. According to the myth, Merlin was born of a mortal woman and a demon father, which bestowed upon him magical powers.
The design of the coin depicts Merlin holding a magic stave and a golden sickle used for cutting mistletoe in the sacred grove. An owl, a symbol of wisdom, sits on his shoulder. In the background, Glastonbury Tor can be seen, which is believed to be the inspiration for the mythical island of Avalon. Each coin contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and is struck to The Royal Mint's bullion standard. The coin has a value of £100 meaning that for UK residents it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
