American Gold Eagle History
The American Eagle gold coin was first introduced as a bullion coin by the US Mint in 1986 in response to the growing popularity for national bullion coins.
The gold Eagle coins are available in denominations of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz sizes, with legal face values of $5, $10, $25 and $50 respectively. Following the older tradition for coin production, the gold Eagles are struck with a fineness of 916.7 gold purity (22 carat), similar to the Krugerrand and Sovereign.
Design:
The design of the American Eagle gold coin displays Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full length figure of Lady Liberty, carrying a torch and an olive branch. This design was taken from the older $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles gold coins, which was commissioned to create coins similar to the ancient Greek and Roman styles.
The reverse of the gold coin shows the equally iconic American eagle soaring above the nest with a female eagle and hatchlings. The design changes infrequently, but 2021 marks an exciting new year for the series with a new 'Type 2' design to be released mid-year. Together the designs signify the strength, unity and strength of America.
