The 1995 Proof American Five Dollar Gold Coin was issued by the US Mint to commemorate 100 years of the protection of Civil War battlefields.
This proof gold coin was produced at the West Point mint in New York (indicated by the W mark), with a mintage of 55,246 coins. The coin has a reeded edge and a face value of $5.
The obverse of the coin was designed by Donald Troiani and features a bugler on a horse. LIBERTY and 1995 appear above and below the image. Troiani's initials appear beneath the horse's back hooves, as do the letters TDR: Thomas D. Rogers, Sr - a sculptor for the US Mint.
The reverse side was designed by Alfred Maletsky, and features a Bald Eagle lying on a flat shield. The shield bears a rough American flag style, and the bird is carrying a banner in its beak that reads "Let us Protect and Preserve".
