Queen Anne acceded to the English throne in 1702. The sister-in-law of William III, Anne was a stout middle-aged, fretful, affectionate and essentially ordinary woman who sought much advice from those around her especially John Churchill, Earl of Marlborough, the country's greatest soldier and diplomat.
It was in her reign that the Scots and English joined in the act of Union of 1707. The new Britain became the world's most powerful nation for the next 200 years.
This shield back guinea is not so well known as the more common spade type. These first type guineas which were minted between 1763-1786, have an ornate shield on the reverse. A little scarcer as well. In good fine condition.
