Third Portrait:
Start Year: 1985
End Year: 1997
Sculptor: Raphael Maklouf
This is the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. For the first time she is wearing the King George IV State Diadem (worn for the annual State Opening of Parliament), as well as earrings and a necklace.
Only proof versions of the sovereign and half sovereign were made during the Third Portrait time period. As such, most of these coins will be proof coins but not sold as proofs as they may have minor marks.
The third portrait was not used in 1989 on sovereigns due to special 500th anniversary of gold sovereigns.
