George III 1817-1820
The very first modern Gold Sovereigns were struck in 1817 following the Great Recoinage, and featured King George III.
The coins of this period were designed by Benedetto Pistrucci (BP), the Italian sculptor responsible for the St George & Dragon reverse, and William Wellesley Pole (WWP), who was Master of the Mint until 1823.
