Description

This 1802 Third Guinea features George III, with first Laurel Head on the obverse, and the date below a crown on the reverse. Minted only during the reign of George III, the Third Guinea was struck from 1797 to 1813. At the time, they were known as seven shilling pieces. A gap of four years ensued before the sovereign appeared in the currency as part of the Great Recoinage.

Obverse
The first laureate bust of George the third facing right. The inscription around the edge of the coin reads 'GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA' (George III by the grace of God).

Reverse
Royal crown with the date below and an inscription of 'BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR' (King of the British territories, Defender of the Faith).
