A 1989 gold proof Half Sovereign from The Royal Mint. This year of coin features a special design to mark the 500th anniversary of the original Tudor sovereign.
This coin weighs the same as a regular Half Sovereign, at 3.99 grams and is struck with 22 carat gold (91.67% fineness). This proof has been struck using specially selected blanks and highly polished dies. During striking, the coinage dies exert enormous pressure on the coin blank, with at least two separate blows (or strikes), ensuring that the impression has extra clarity. Complete with its own booklet, and bound in a good looking case.
