This Royal Mint Gold box set features a proof Double Sovereign (£2 coin), Sovereign and Half Sovereign.
The Double Sovereign two pound coin features a design celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic Ocean. The man behind this feat was the Italian physicist, Guglielmo Marconi, who orchestrated a morse code message - the letter S - via radio waves from Poldhu in Cornwall, England, to Newfoundland, Canada, where he was waiting to receive the message. Marconi received the Nobel Prize in 1909 as reward for his pioneering efforts.
Robert Evans, a senior engraver at the Royal Mint, is responsible for this design, with the £2 coin featuring the three dots of morse for the letter S as part of the pattern. The edge of the coin reads WIRELESS BRIDGES THE ATLANTIC... MARCONI 1901.
All three coins bear the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as created by artist Ian Rank-Broadley.
This set is complete with its own Certificate of Authenticity and bound in a good-looking case.
