Description

The 1993 Proof American Five Dollar Gold Coin.

Produced to commemorate James Madison and the creation of the Bill of Rights in 1793. The US Mint produced 78,651 of these proof coins.

The obverse, featuring Madison, was designed by Scott R. Blazek and modelled by William C. Cousins. Their initials can be seen on Madison's sleeve just above the elbow.

The reverse features BILL OF RIGHTS in large letters, with a quote from Madison. A torch and a laurel branch flank the message, and the designer initials appear below the branch: JDP for designer Joseph D. Peña and EZS for Philadelphia Mint sculptor Edgar Zell Steever IV who modelled the reverse.

At the time of issue, the US Mint had an additional surcharge attached to these coins in order to raise funds for the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Trust Fund.
