Fiji Coins


Fiji and the Kingdom of Tonga are both archipelagos located in the southern Pacific Ocean. Fiji was a British Colony from 1874 – 1970. Tonga was granted British protected status from 1900 – 70, never relinquishing sovereignty to any foreign powers.

In Fiji, the first coins issued were in 1934 while under British administration. In 1980 a coin celebrating ten years of independence was struck by the Royal Mint in the UK. Coins in recent years have consisted of commemorative coins only.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga is responsible for the issuance of coins in Tonga. The first coins issued were in 1962 and were the golden Koula. The Koula features a portrait of Tongan Queen Salote.
