Lesotho Gold Coins

A small, enclaved country within South Africa, Lesotho was previously known as Basutoland between 1868 and 1966 during which time it was a British Crown Colony. Following 1966 it declared independence and is now a fully sovereign state. The officially currency of Lesotho is the Loti, although the South African Rand is also accepted as legal tender.

A few commemorative gold coins have been issued since Lesotho declared independence.

Lesotho began its history in 1822 when King Moshoeshoe I formed his own clan and settled Basutoland. The British agreed to make Lesotho a British protectorate in 1868, signing a treaty at Aliwal North.

After declaring independence in 1966 Lesotho experienced a period a political turmoil, with legal challenges and military coups taking place as recently as 2014.

The commemorative coins produced for Lesotho celebrate key anniversaries, and were produced by the Rand Refinery in Germiston, Johannesburg.
