The obverse design features the Augustus Saint-Gaudens' image of Liberty, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with 50 stars around the edge to represent each US state. The reverse design of the American Gold Eagle is the original design by Miley Busiek, featuring a male Eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest, or the new 'type 2' design of an close up bald eagle's head .

The US government guarantee the stated amount of actual gold weight in troy ounces. By law, the gold must be sourced from American mines.
