With a legacy spanning more than 200 years, The Sovereign remains one of the world’s most recognisable and trusted bullion coins. Today, The Royal Mint has revealed one of the most significant updates to the series in modern times.

Originally introduced in 1817 following the Great Recoinage, the modern Sovereign featured Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic depiction of Saint George and the Dragon, a design that has become iconic around the globe. 2026 however marks a new chapter in this long-standing series.

As part of The Royal Mint’s ongoing commitment to innovation, the 2026 Sovereign range incorporates advanced security features designed to protect investors and collectors alike. Following the lead of the Britannia bullion coins introduced in 2021, these new features enhance the coin’s authenticity and make counterfeiting more difficult than ever.

The reverse of the 2026 Sovereign retains Pistrucci’s timeless George and Dragon design, now framed by a border of micro-text bearing the inscription “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”, the motto of the Order of the Garter. This subtle yet sophisticated addition provides both a visual link to the original 1817 Sovereign and a layer of modern security.

It remains unclear at this time whether commemorative designs, which typically feature something different to the George & Dragon design, will feature the same micro-text border, or will incorporate their own unique security features.

Unlike the Britannia series, the obverse of the 2026 Sovereigns also include two additional security measures. A latent image is located at the bottom of the coin and alternates between the Tudor Crown, and the Tudor Rose, a nod to the origins of the Sovereign in the Tudor period. The outer-boundaries of the obverse also use a ‘half-tone’ pattern for additional security and visual depth.

Beyond design innovation, the 2026 Sovereign also returns to a more traditional yellow-gold alloy, moving away from the rose-tinted hue of recent years, a change welcomed by many collectors and investors. The exact make-up of this alloy has not yet been disclosed, but it signals a renewed respect for the Sovereign’s classic appearance.

The 2026 Sovereign therefore represents a major new milestone for the series, offering modern security features, with a more traditional hue, and sets the stage for the Sovereign to remain one of the premier bullion coins around the world in the years ahead.
