Quarter ounce gold coins hold 7.78 grams of gold. They are among the most popular fractional sizes, striking a balance between a purchase small enough to make comfortably and a coin large enough to be worth holding in quantity.
Every coin below contains the same quarter ounce of gold. The 22 carat coins are alloyed with copper or silver for durability and so weigh more overall, while the 24 carat coins are pure gold.
Like all investment grade gold, these coins are exempt from VAT, so the price you pay reflects the gold content and a small premium rather than being inflated by sales tax.
Gold Britannia coins are British legal tender, which makes them exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents no matter how many you buy or sell. At this size that exemption is particularly useful, because a position built up from many small coins can be sold down gradually with no CGT liability on the profit.

The Chinese Panda is the odd one out. The series moved onto metric weights in 2016, so the coin that replaced the old quarter ounce holds 8 grams, slightly more than the 7.78 grams of the others. Pandas issued before the change hold a true quarter ounce.
