Chile was conquered by the Spanish in the 1500s, with gold being one of the key resources that drew the attention of the Spanish. Placer gold was mined using indigenous labour, but production slowed down in the 16 and 1700s.

In recent years the mint gained some infamy for minting a batch of coins in which Chile was misspelled as C-H-I-I-E. The mint’s general manager, Gregorio Iniguez, and several other employees lost their jobs as a result of the error. The coins however have become something of a collectors item in their own right.
