The American Buffalo, also known as the Gold Buffalo, is the US Mint's first 24 carat bullion coin (.9999 fineness). First introduced in 2006, this was highly welcomed by both investors and collectors.
The Gold Buffalo bullion coin was introduced by the US Mint to compete with other 24 carat bullion coins. The only other official US bullion coin, is the American Gold Eagle, but this was only 22 carat gold in purity. Similar to the Eagle, they have a face value and are legal tender in United States.
The main obverse design features an American Indian by designer James Earle Fraser, whilst the reverse shows depicts the American bison, who was actually based on "Black Diamond", a resident bison at New York City's Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century.
With limited annual mintage, the Gold Buffalo is highly sought after by both collectors and investors.
