Half ounce gold coins hold 15.55 grams of gold, exactly half of a troy ounce. They are the largest of the fractional sizes, which makes them a sensible middle ground: a meaningful amount of gold in each coin, but a holding that can still be sold in parts rather than all at once.
The premium sits between that of a full ounce coin and the smaller fractions. You will pay a little more per gram than on a one ounce coin, and noticeably less than on a quarter or tenth ounce, so investors who want some flexibility without giving up much on cost tend to settle here.
All of the coins below contain the same half ounce of gold. The difference is in the alloy: 22 carat coins are hardened with copper or silver and so weigh more in total, while 24 carat coins are pure gold and weigh exactly what they contain.
Like all investment grade gold, these coins are exempt from VAT, so the price you pay reflects the gold content and a small premium rather than being inflated by sales tax.
Gold Britannia coins are British legal tender, which makes them exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents no matter how many you buy or sell. The exemption applies to the half ounce coin in exactly the same way as to the full ounce.

The Chinese Panda is the exception in the table. China moved the series onto metric weights in 2016, so the coin that replaced the old half ounce holds 15 grams rather than 15.55. Pandas struck before the change do contain a full half ounce, so the year of issue matters when comparing prices.
