King Henry VII History
Born in Pembroke Castle in 1457, King Henry VII had a tenuous claim to the English throne. Following the War of the Roses, and the Battle of Bosworth Field, he overthrew King Richard III, and began the Tudor dynasty.
King Henry’s foreign policy centred around maintaining peace and improving economic prosperity. He signed treaties with the French, Spanish and Holy Roman Empire. He arranged for the marriage of his son, Arthur to Spaniard Catherine of Aragon (who would later go on to marry his other son Henry) in order to strengthen his ties to the newly united Spanish Kingdom.
Henry was normally a reserved man but shocked his courtiers when he learned of the death of his son Arthur, and publicly showed his intense grief. He died in 1509 of tuberculosis, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. His was succeeded by his second son, the infamous Henry VIII.
