Austrian Gold Coin History
The Austrian Mint has a rich history going back 800 years, beginning in 1194 to the current day. The foundations were laid by English King, Richard the Lionheart. Having been captured by Duke Leopold V, Richard forfeited twelve tonnes of Silver he had taken during the Crusades in order to secure his release.
Since the early 1800’s The Austrian Mint has been located in Vienna and produces a number of fine gold coins. Although other mints were established in other locations throughout Austria’s history, The Austrian Mint has been the official and only mint since 1918, and continue to produce coins to this day. The Euro-denominated Philharmonic series is their best known bullion coin minted today.
