The 1991 American Proof Five Dollar Coin feature Mount Rushmore and was issued by the US Mint to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mount Rushmore National Monument.
The coin obverse reads LIBERTY and 1991. The design, by John Mercanti, features a Bald Eagle flying, with its talons clasping a hammer and chisel - sculpting tools used to create the Mount Rushmore monument. A ribbon flows from its beak bearing the American motto “In God We Trust”. Six stars are visible on the right hand side, and below them is Mount Rushmore itself.
The reverse, designed by calligrapher Robert Lamb, is the first in the US Mint's history to be entirely made up of lettering. The edge reads 'United States of America', 'Five Dollars', and the latin 'E Pluribus Unum' (Out of one, many) but the central text states Mount Rushmore National Monument. Underneath are the initials RL for Lamb, but also WC for William Cousins, who modelled the coin.
Please note: This proof coin is provided in a capsule only. There is no box or certificate.
