Gold Kangaroo Coins
The coin now known as the gold Kangaroo began life in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget, introduced by Gold Corp, the operation trading today as the Perth Mint. The earliest issues carried images of famous Australian gold nuggets on the reverse, which is where the original name came from. It is the flagship of the Australian gold coins range.
What sets the series apart is that the reverse design is changed every single year, something very few bullion coins do. That gives each date its own identity and a following among collectors, on top of the coin's value as 999.9 fine gold backed by a government owned mint.
Like all investment grade gold, the gold Kangaroo is exempt from VAT, so the price you pay reflects the gold content and a small premium rather than being inflated by sales tax.
Gold Kangaroo Coin Specification
The gold Kangaroo is an Australian gold coin manufactured by the Perth Mint. It has been struck in 999.9 fine gold since the series began in 1986, so a coin from any year holds the same amount of gold for its size.
| 1oz Gold Kangaroo | Specification |
|---|---|
| Purity | 24 carat |
| Fineness | 999.9 |
| Gold content | 31.10g |
| Total weight | 31.10g |
| Diameter | 32.10mm |
| Face value | 100 Australian Dollars |
Changes to the Gold Kangaroo Design
The switch from nuggets to the kangaroo came in 1989, when the Perth Mint decided a kangaroo represented the country better than the gold nuggets used for the first three years. The name Nugget stuck for some time afterwards, which is why the same coin is described both ways. Since then a new kangaroo design has been issued annually. The specification itself has not moved: the coin has been struck in 999.9 fine gold throughout, so a 1986 Nugget and a current year Kangaroo contain exactly the same amount of gold.
Denominations & Sizes
The Kangaroo is produced across an unusually wide range of sizes, from a half gram coin up to a full kilo. The four core sizes launched together in 1986, with the larger investment formats added later and the half gram Mini Roo aimed at gift buyers and those starting small. Face values run from 3,000 Australian dollars on the kilo coin down to 2 dollars on the Mini Roo, all nominal figures set well below the gold value. Every size is struck to the same 999.9 purity.

Kangaroo Coins in Other Metals
The Perth Mint also strikes a silver Kangaroo, introduced in 2016 as a one ounce bullion coin with the same annually changing approach to its design. The Mint's wider Australian wildlife range includes the silver Koala and the silver Kookaburra, both long running series in their own right.
Gold Kangaroo Price
Gold Kangaroo prices are derived from the value of the gold each coin contains. Each gold Kangaroo coin weighs 31.10 grams, and is struck to a purity of 24 carat, meaning it contains 31.10 grams of pure gold.
Gold Kangaroo prices can vary thanks to the coin's history and numismatic appeal, with certain years or designs being particularly desirable with collectors. The price of a new gold Kangaroo coin will typically be based on today's gold price, with a small premium to cover the cost of manufacturing and supply of the coin. Older or rare gold Kangaroo coins can cost considerably more than the UK gold price. With the global price of gold being primarily calculated in dollars, periods in which the pound is weak versus the dollar will see UK gold Kangaroo prices rise, while a strong pound would see lower prices in the UK.

Gold Kangaroo Value
Investors often ask what is the value of a gold Kangaroo? Australian gold Kangaroo coins have a face value of 100 Australian Dollars. It is important to note that the face value is a nominal amount that has no bearing on the actual value of the coin. As mentioned, the gold Kangaroo coin's main value can usually be worked out based on the current gold price. It is this simplicity that makes gold bullion coins appealing. They are bought and sold based on their intrinsic metal value without having to worry about any numismatic value and a more complicated selling process.
You can always find a simple benchmark value for a gold Kangaroo thanks to the publicly available spot price. The value of a gold Kangaroo is therefore generally the same regardless of the year and is just based on the metal content. Some years of gold Kangaroo might command a further premium. A lower mintage, or special design could see their value increase beyond their metal content.
The easiest way to work out a gold Kangaroo value is to use its gold weight of 31.10 grams and multiply that by the current gold spot price in grams. As a coin with a purity of 999.9 fineness, it's important to calculate the 24 carat gold Kangaroo value, to ensure you have an accurate price.
How Much are Gold Kangaroo Coins Worth?
If you are wondering how much are gold Kangaroo coins worth, a simple rule of thumb is that a gold Kangaroo has 31.10g of pure gold, or 1 troy ounce. If you see the gold price in troy ounces you can therefore work out how much a gold Kangaroo is worth quite quickly.
