The gold Philharmonic coin was introduced in 1989 with a face value of 2,000 Austrian Schillings. Initially available in two sizes, 1oz and 1/4oz, by 1990 it was the best selling bullion coin in Europe and second in the world. In 1991 and 1994, the sizes were expanded to include 1/10 oz and 1/2 oz.
Legal tender in Austria, the Philharmonic coins are currently the only European bullion coins with a face value in Euros.
