2010 Proof 50p Gold Coin Girlguiding Boxed

The Royal Mint released a Fifty Pence piece in 2010 to commemorate 100 years of Girlguiding in the UK. 1,000 proof gold coins were issued as collector's items, complete with Royal Mint box with a certificate of authentication.

The obverse (front) of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II - the fourth such portrait in her life. The reverse of the coin was designed by Jonathan Evans and Donna Hainan of the Edinburgh design group 'Blood'. It features a six 'Trefoil' design meant to depict the different sections of the organisation; all surrounding the Guide Association's logo in the centre.

The Guide Association runs Girlguiding in the UK up to the age of 25 and features notable age brackets of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Seniors. The group was founded in 1909 when several girls showed up at the Boy Scout Rally and asked for a similar event 'for the girls'. Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouts, set up the Girl Guides and appointed his sister Agnes as its chief.

By the time this coin was released, Girlguiding in the UK had over 550,000 members.
