Description

An 1828 Half Sovereign gold coin featuring the bare head of George IV on the obverse, as designed by J.B. Merlen.

The reverse has the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom in an ornate shield, surmounted by the Royal Crown. The centre section of the shield shows the Hanoverian arms, surmounted by a small crown.

Not one of Britain's better monarchs, his reign as King lasted 10 years from 1820 to 1830. However, he was Prince Regent from 1811 when his father George III at 73 lapsed into final insanity. Gradually his reputation deteriorated causing the country much embarrassment, he became a national liability and but for the industrial revolution which was growing in strength the country would have been bankrupt. Due to the financial problems at the time there was a shortage of silver to produce the now scarce coinage of George IV.
