Description

The 2022 Sovereign is a British gold coin, minted by the Royal Mint. The weight of the coin is 7.98 grams with a fineness of 916.7 (22 carat gold), this means it contains 7.3224 grams of pure gold. The diameter of the coin is 22 mm. The Sovereigns have a face value of 1 Pound and are legal tender in the UK.

Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Sovereign: The 2022 memorial sovereign coins commemorate the reign of Britains longest serving monarch Queen Elizabeth II who reigned for 70 years and 214 days (Feb 6, 1952 - Sept 8, 2022). The coin features the Royal Coat of Arms which is distinguishable from the current Royal Coat of Arms due to it featuring the St Edward's Crown from the crown jewels rather than the Tudor Crown chosen by King Charles III.

The coin has no mintmark, indicating it was struck by The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales.

Obverse: The obverse of the King Charles III 2022 Gold Sovereign features the King's official portrait, designed by Martin Jennings. This effigy of King Charles III shows his profile facing left, without a crown. This is the first official portrait of Charles III to be used on coins minted by The Royal Mint. The sculptor's initials, 'M.J.', are visible at the bottom of the head.

The inscription on the coin reads 'CHARLES III.DEI.GRA.REX.FID.DEF'.

Reverse: The reverse of the 2022 Gold Sovereign is decorated with the British Royal Coat of Arms in memory of Queen Elizabeth II. The intricate design features a powerful lion and unicorn rampant on a central shield displaying the heraldic symbols of the nations of the United Kingdom. The design differs from the current royal coat of arms in its use of St Edward's Crown, from the Crown Jewels, rather than the Tudor Crown chosen by King Charles. This design is the creation of Jody Clark, and the sculptor's initials, J.C., and the year of issue also appear on the reverse.
