Description

A rare 1870 Sydney Branch mint gold Sovereign. Graded to AU50 (Very Fine) by the NGC.

The picture is taken of a coin of the stated grade. You may not receive the exact coin pictured, but it will be a coin of the same grade and will be graded and slabbed by the same numismatic grading service.

Text on the coin reads "Victoria D:G: BRITANNIAR : REG F:D" and "SYDNEY MINT AUSTRALIA ONE SOVEREIGN".

The Sydney Branch Mint minted Sovereigns from 1855 to 1870, and these are the only Sovereigns to have ever featured the words "ONE SOVEREIGN". As they were the first sovereigns to be minted outside the UK, there were concerns that the quality of the coins would not be up to standard. They wanted the coins to be easily identifiable, so they could be removed from circulation easily if required.
