Gold Krugerrand Coins
The Krugerrand was first struck in 1967 and has a fair claim to being the coin that created the modern bullion market. South Africa produced it to give private investors a straightforward way to own gold at a time when few countries offered anything similar, and by the 1970s it accounted for the overwhelming majority of gold coins traded worldwide. It remains the best known of the South African gold coins.
The coin is named after Paul Kruger, president of the old South African Republic, whose portrait appears on the obverse; the reverse carries the springbok, the national animal. It is struck by the Rand Refinery with gold supplied to the South African Mint, and its design has stayed essentially unchanged for more than half a century, which is a large part of why dealers everywhere recognise it on sight.
Like all investment grade gold, the Krugerrand is exempt from VAT, so the price you pay reflects the gold content and a small premium rather than being inflated by sales tax.

Denominations & Sizes
The Krugerrand was produced only as a one ounce coin for its first thirteen years. Demand for smaller pieces led the Rand Refinery to add half, quarter and tenth ounce versions in 1980, and all four sizes have been made ever since. Unusually, the Krugerrand carries no numeric denomination stamped on the coin: it is legal tender in South Africa with a value tied to the prevailing gold price rather than a fixed figure.
